New Ski Cross Track at Kimberley Alpine Resort
Kimberley Alpine Team (KAT) is excited to announce the completion of a new Ski Cross Course
at Kimberley Alpine Resort. This labour of love is the culmination of years of strategic and
technical planning, grant applications and multi-organizational collaboration.
In 2022 KAT was awarded the Mackenzie Investments Top Peak Award of $50,000 to put
towards facility and equipment upgrades. KAT began dreaming big and aimed our sights on
building a Ski Cross course at Kimberley Alpine Resort. Additional funding was received from
the Columbia Basin Trust’s ReDi grant program for track construction and related equipment. All
safety equipment and netting has been purchased by KAT and will be installed prior to the
course opening.
We’d like to extend our thanks to our sponsors. This project could not have been completed
without their gracious support. Brandt Tractor Ltd Cranbrook, with the help of Morgan Granger,
donated the use of a new John Deere excavator for construction of the massive dirt moving
project. Hummers Contracting Ltd provided equipment transport at short notice and at a
discounted rate. Yaciw Enterprises donated the use of additional machinery. Course
construction was completed and donated by local trail builder Lifetime Outdoor Inc (Jeff Cook &
Leah McDonald).
We are extremely grateful to Kimberley Alpine Resort and the Resorts of the Canadian Rockies
for their ongoing commitments. Our ski town rallied with hard-working volunteers, KAT’s Ski
Cross committee and outstanding community support from local businesses. We now have a
dedicated Ski Cross Course in Kimberley BC!
What is Ski Cross and why is Kimberley Alpine Team so excited? The ski cross event lines up
four athletes, who race head-to-head through an active course of berms and rollers, requiring
speed and strategy to be the first to finish. Ski Cross was first introduced as an Olympic event at
Vancouver 2010, where Canada dominated the sport and continues to do so today. It is fast
becoming an exciting movement as it is fun for athletes and spectators alike!
Our own KAT alumni boast decorated SX World Cup podiums, Canadian National SX Team and
Canadian Olympic SX Teams, Canadian National SX Head Coach and a SX X-Games Gold.
India Sherret, Zoe Chore and Stanley Hayer are not only local Ski Cross trailblazers, but also
national role models. Most recently at the 2025 SX Provincials, KAT had 2 of our U14 Athletes
finish 2nd and 6th. KAT is proud to have such a rich history in Ski Cross and we are elated to
see where our future KAT SX Athletes will soar!
The new 800m course is built in-between Buckhorn and the Terrain Park, without impacting any
of the current runs. Several exciting features are highlighted between 6 bermed corners over the
125m elevation drop. An athlete staging area will avoid congestion at the start area to ensure
safety for athletes and public resort users. The finish area is designed with lots of space for
spectators. The majority of the course can be viewed from the North Star Express chairlift.
KAT is excited to have this training space and to host future Ski Cross events. Kimberley Alpine
Team hopes to inspire a new generation of ski racers and freestyle competitors within the
Community and surrounding area. Todd Larsen is the Ski Cross Program Coordinator who will
oversee the integration, SX training, coach development, safety coordination, and track
maintenance.
